Our story

We opened Pan y Pepinillos Café with a simple idea: build the kind of coffee shop we wanted to go to ourselves. A place that takes specialty coffee seriously without taking itself too seriously. Where the espresso is dialled in every morning, the brioche comes from the best bakers in Madrid, and you can sit down and actually hear the person across the table.

The name is a small wink. Pan y pepinillos—bread and pickles—is the kind of pairing you don’t expect to love until you try it. That’s how we think about the cafe: an everyday combination of things, done with care, that ends up feeling like a small ritual.

Specialty coffee, served honestly

We serve specialty coffee from a rotating selection of European and Spanish roasters. We only work with single-origin beans—never blends—so what you taste in the cup tells you exactly where the coffee came from and how it was roasted. The lineup changes regularly, which means there’s always something new on filter for our regulars.

Espresso, flat white, cortado, batch brew, V60. Plant milks available. A short, honest menu with everything you’d expect from a specialty shop—and a few signatures of our own, like our pistachio latte and matcha latte, which our regulars come back for.

Pastries from the best bakers in Madrid

Great coffee deserves great food next to it. Our pastry counter is curated daily from artisan bakeries we trust, alongside our own homemade items—brioche scrambled eggs, banana bread, cinnamon rolls, energy balls. For brunch, expect honest, generous plates rather than long menus: avocado toast, tostada de huevos revueltos, sweet brioches with seasonal fillings. Everything is made to be eaten next to a great cup of coffee, not against it.

Awards and recognition

In 2025 and 2026, Pan y Pepinillos Café was selected among The Best Coffee Shops Spain—the national ranking of the country’s strongest specialty coffee venues. In 2026, we were also nominated to the 100 World’s Best Coffee Shops in Europe, a recognition that places us alongside the most respected independent shops on the continent.

These awards matter to us because they come from people who pay attention to the details we obsess over: extraction, sourcing, service, consistency day after day. They’re also a quiet promise to anyone walking in for the first time—you’re in good hands.

A small space, designed on purpose

Pan y Pepinillos Café is small and intentional. There’s a window bench outside for warm afternoons, a calm interior inspired by Japandi design, and no laptops. We made that last decision early and have kept it: the cafe is for coffee, conversation, and a slow pastry—not for remote work. Most of our customers tell us it’s the reason they keep coming back.

The result is a coffee shop that feels personal. We know our regulars by name and we’re glad to meet you if you’re visiting Madrid for the first time. There’s no reservation system—just walk in.
